This post is special for me as the tumbler variety gave me the much awaited success in growing tomato’s in containers.
I purchased the seeds of this variety as it was written on the label that it can be grown in containers. As the name suggests this variety is specially meant for containers. Its a determinate-cascading variety where no side shoot pruning is required.
The variety proved itself, grew beautifully and gave a wonderful harvest. An inexperienced tomato grower should try this variety.

Just seen you blog as I was researching Tomato Tumbler F1.
Have you ever tried growing the seeds from the tomatoes that were produced and if so how did these F2s do in plant type and cropping?

No, I didnt collect seeds as it was a hybrid variety, F2 would have shown traits of either of the parents.

Hi,
Currently I am growing both flower n veggies..Flower incl gernerics such as hibiscus, champa, mogra, roses etc. Plan to add aboli n dalia after the summer …In veggies have okra, tomato, brinjal,ridge goud and bitter gourd…+ herb garden-rosemary, sweet marjoram and oregano…hav lots of other seeds as well…but will wait for the rians to begin to start dowing..the weather is too hot in mumbai and my plants get direct sunlight which is too harsh in the summer.
Where do you get the seeds from? Btw ru from mumbai as well?

Your garden portfolio is really diversified. Where do you keep the containers in balcony or the terrace?
I also try to maintain a balance in my garden. I have Spanish Jasmine(Chameli), night cestrum(Raat Rani), Jasmine auriculatum(Juhi) in containers these flowers fill my entire balcony with fragrance in the night they are wonderful. I have to grow Parijat this rains, tried with seeds but they didn’t germinate, will look for a sapling.
Here in Pune also, the heat is too much for the plants. Currently I am growing an indeterminate variety of tomato it has hundreds of flowers but the fruit formation is very low due to the heat.
I buy seeds from various places – gardening stores, exhibitions, online…

Ccocpeat – To add to what Shubha has suggested and apart from Ratanshi you could contact http://www.marson.com/contactus.asp and enquire about products, dealears / retailers and shipping (if possible)
The Terra care product seems to be coco peat brick/block described as cocopeat based gworing medium you could ask them about details of this product.
Ratanshi also ships the products after receiving the payment through DD ro MO, I had called them up few months back for hydroton. You may get compost there they have some very good organic products, I have used them they are popular and available in Pune also (biogrow).
You could also start composting at home and convert your organic waste into compost. Its not difficult. You could refer to : http://www.dailydump.org they sell it in mumbai also and do the home delivery also.
For seeds also you can talk to ratanshi they must be selling it otherwise they could point you to so some seed store / retailer.
You could also order seeds online from http://www.biocarve.com/products.asp?id=6 its an Indian company based in Punjab and seeds are couriered to you within seven days. I had purchased cherry tomato seeds from them.

Happened to come across ur note here on FG’s blog..I am Mumbai as well and have taken to gardening in the last 8 months.
You can get coco peat from nurseries, although u might hav to search for one. Gardening stuff aren’t as easily available in Mumbai like Pune or Bangalore.
You can get peat from Kora Kendra (it is govt owned), they have good stuff. For the seeds they dont hav as much variety, I think u might want to call ratnashi agro and find out…

Wow FG, loved ur recent success with the cabbage…They are so amazing. I tried them with little success. Plan to start again once the heat wave passes off. I will have to search for the postal address,. But I can give d location and it shudn’t be very difficult to find. Its in Borivali (W), just after Mc Donalds, take a U turn an arnd 2 min drive to the left u will find Kora Kendra. U can ask anyone for Kora Kendra nursery there. It is a well known landmark.
I buy from KK as it is convenient for me, but I am sure u might find some next to ur place also. Between I got some Coco peat from Hypercity (more expensive than KK), it is in solid form and expands once u pour water.
I buy seeds from KK, Ratnashi, Pune and some from abroad whenever I manage to travel..

Yes GG, Pocha seeds is a legacy of more than 120 years. it was established in 1884. It a nice experience to visit them in the old architectural building in a big nursery area.
Their seeds are really high quality, I remember we had a booklet at home named Pocha seeds, when I was a kid, and I always used to turn the pages of it as the beautiful images of plants and veggies fascinated me a lot. Later I came to know that my father’s uncle had purchased some corn seeds from them in 60’s and the booklet had come along.
When I came to Pune and noticed the Pocha seeds I was thrilled and exited (the emotional link described above). The staff is really nice and helpful.
I had purchased chili-x236, cabbage – tara, tomato-tumbler, arka vikas (s22), red reddish and African marigold from them.
Their site is also working http://pochaagro.com/ (though for the first time for me).
They have a catalogue, let me know if you want any.
Thanks for the offer GG, my H&T didn’t do well, but I have some fruits, and I am planning to save some seeds according to the method described by you. Will let you know about that.
Btw. The beefsteak, marmande and rose de berne sapling as doing well. though are are attacked by leaf miner, and as they are heirlooms there is no disease resistance (am I right?)

Yes, the container you see above is 5L, however its not sufficient for tomatoes (specially semi determinate / indeterminate ones) however chilli can be grown in it. what are you using it for?

That varies from plant to plant, if you are interested in tomato, usually I feed them in 4-5 days. I use water soluble fertilizers I dissolve them in feed them manually or through drip.
For vegetative stage – 20-10-10 + Micro Nutrients
For Flowering stage – 17-25-12 / 9-27-22 + MN (these two interesting combinations have come from mixing 13-40-13 with 20-10-10 and 5-15-30)
For fruiting stage – 5-15-30 + MN (tomatoes need high K during that stage)

Is 5-15-30 from Ratanshi? Last time I checked they were selling this Maxigrow for Rs 6 a packet. When I enquired, i was told it is 400/kg.

It is not from Ratahshi, I purchased it from Vardhaman fert. (around 2 yrs back half a kg costed aroung Rs. 65) Maxigrow is for very small scale container grower, not feasible for us. 🙂

Nice to know you get multiple combos there in Pune. Its a shame in Bangalore that you don’t get lot of varieties..Either that or they are not interested in selling one kg packets.
